Essay: The Book of Thoth (I-III)

Choosing threw the Ancient Egypt section was hard because I love all Egyptian myths but I chose The Book of Thoth I, II and III because I thought of many Essay Topics as I read it. First, parents and children are definitely prominent in this story. Nefer-ka-ptah wanted to learn the knowledge and gain the powers of the god Thoth. His wife, Ahura, had a bad feeling about the journey and didn’t want him to go on it but Nefer-ka-ptah still wanted to go regardless of what his wife said. If he had listened to his wife’s’ warning or at least re considered it, they might have survived. But the single-minded husband not only didn’t listen to his wife but she felt obliged to join him with their son. After Nefer-ka-ptah got the book, Thoth got really mad and drowned both Ahura and their son. So if Nefer-ka-ptah listened to his wife he would have spared the life of his family. Instead, he went on to peruse the journey for The Book of Thoth regardless of the safety of his family.

Not only was the finding of The Book of Thoth something that would cost lives, it was also a painful way to die. This could be an example of Tragedy and Pathos because the incident of the drowning was extremely sad. Being dragged off the boat and into the water to be drowned has to be such a terrifying experience. Not only is one unsure of what is pulling them, the power of Ra, in the water but they were also gasping for breath as their lungs filled with water. It was also tragic on the timing of the drowning’s. The wife drowned on the way back from the journey and when they went back out to sea the son drowned. So not only was it sad that they drowned but that Thoth waited to kill the wife apart from the son.
